April Fool’s Day sees 5FM implementing annual line-up changes but fans of South Africa’s youthful, music-centric entertainment powerhouse need not change their listening routines much in 2015. The station made some big changes last year and is enjoying some exciting traction including six MTN Radio Award nominations, two Nickelodean Kids Choice Award nominations and numerous honourable mentions ranging from social media clout to industry opinion leadership.
The primary focus for the station in 2015 is Youngblood 5, 5FM’s heart-with-three-parts. YB5 features good causes, which will be hosted by Catherine Grenfell in 2015 but the station is adding two other strings to that guitar. In 2015 5FM will carve out a talk feature hosted by Nick Hamman on the third Friday of every month between 3pm and 4pm called 5Talks. The aim of 5Talks is to showcase a youthful South African who has a story to tell. The talk feature will go live to air from a studio audience who will be able to ask questions and delve into how’s and why’s with the guest. This is 5FM’s commitment to building inspiring success stories and sharing them with a motivated, determined and uncontainable audience. YB5 will also bring to air an entrepreneurship challenge in partnership with a tech start-up NGO that will catapult new business ideas into the realm of reality. This is how 5FM plans to share the knowledge and change the future.
5FM keeps the daytime line-up stable kicking off with the Fresh@5 Team followed by Nick Hamman who together deliver the station’s five hour power breakfast. Fresh@5’s Catherine Grenfell will take up the role of Senior Producer on The 5th Element with DJ Warras and Tumi Voster. “Change is good and I’m excited about the move to work with The 5th Element team,” says Catherine. Nick Hamman will also be counting down 5FM’s weekly Top 40 Chart Show on Saturdays from 10:00 – 14:00.
News Reader and smart-as-a-whip contributor Kim Schulze takes up a new corner of the studio with The Roger Goode Show as crazy kid Vic Naidoo moves to host his own show early Friday mornings from 01:00-05:00 and Saturdays and Sundays, 01:00-04:00. Vic says, “I am constantly brainstorming content and my plan is to make pioneering radio. It’s going to be fun and quirky.”
The Roger Goode Show continues to host the best local and international DJ talent on The Happy Hour between 18:00 and 19:00 weekdays and adds local deck spinners Pascal and Pearce to its resident line-up.
Weekends will see a 100% increase on DJ Milkshake’s deck prowess every Friday night from 19:00-22:00 and every Saturday late night between 22:00-01:00. DJ Milkshake will also invite 5FM party experts to host his show on occasion, creating specialist music offerings. DJs that will feature as hosts include 5FM’s DJ Fresh and Euphonik as well as Ultimix stalwart, DJ Kent.
Cape Town club spinner, Mixi, will be present throughout the weekend on Fridays from 22:00-01:00, Saturdays, 19:00-22:00 and on Sundays, 17:00 – 19:00 while Tumi Voster hosts her own three hours on Saturdays from 17:00-19:00. Nicole da Silva takes over Saturdays and Sundays 14:00-17:00. Nicole says, “It’s a fun time of the weekend where I can try out lots of different things, I can’t wait to show our listeners what I’ve been planning.”
In the words of DJ Euphonik – let’s Bang It!
